Having diabetes is not only about controlling blood sugar with insulin shots and oral medications. It is actually a complete lifestyle change while trying to limit the “bad foods” so that medications are kept at the minimum. The truth is: one of the primary things that diabetics have to deal with is the limiting of foods that they can take. This, however, does not mean that someone with a medical condition like so have to live on dry bread and water for the rest of their days. There are actually a number of foods that can be taken in moderation; and then there are the best foods to heal diabetics from their sugar dependency.
Aside from completely removing sugars and sugar substitutes from the diet, diabetics are advised to increase their supply of natural foods.
Natural foods vs. processed foods
Natural foods are those that any person can buy fresh and raw from the grocer’s or the butcher’s. Processed foods are already those that come pre-prepared (in cans, in boxes, in sealed plastic bags, etc.) Diabetics are usually advised to skip the processed meals and go for natural foods instead. There are a number of reasons for this. One: most, if not all processed foods either have too much sugar or salt in them to make them palatable. Too much sugar is, of course, one of the biggest no-no’s in a diabetic’s diet. Salt, on the other hand, encourages abnormal water retention in the system, which should also not be part of any diabetic’s diet.
Two: processed foods contain large amounts of preservatives and additives. These are used to prolong the food’s shelf life or to make it look more presentable. Unfortunately, these preservatives and additives are sometimes made up of salt, sugar, and unwanted carbohydrates (in the form of breading or sauces) that can jack up the blood sugar level of a person with diabetes.
Lastly: processed foods, especially the diet foods, can be misleading. Sometimes, the recommended portions indicated in the box label are completely overlooked by the person. The common thinking goes: as long as it is branded as “diet” food, the person can consume all they want – which is almost always never the case.
Natural foods are the best foods to heal diabetics
Natural foods usually do not contain high levels of salt and sugar. Obviously, all of them do not contain preservatives or additives. However, not because these foods are considered “natural” means a diabetic can consume as much calories as he or she wants. There are still portions to consider because there are simple sugars that still exist in both fruits and vegetables. Also, some natural foods contain high levels of fat, which is also not good for anyone’s diet – diabetic or otherwise.
Natural foods do not have to necessarily mean raw food. Some of the best ingredients to ward of this disease must be cooked. Meat like fish and chicken must be cooked. A lot of vegetables must also be cooked in order to make eating easier. Fruits can be eaten raw or cooked in a number of ways. The key to making these natural foods work to a diabetic’s advantage is to prepare them from scratch while using only natural (or non-processed) ingredients. This lessens the possibility of making that person’s sugar level rise, if the food portions are controlled as well.
