Beginning Signs of Diabetes

Millions of people in America alone have been diagnosed with Diabetes and it is alarming that there might be the same number of people who doesn’t even know they have this challenging disease. The warning signs of diabetes (pre-diabetes) occur in the stage when the cells in a human’s body are becoming resistant to insulin and the blood glucose levels are higher than normal. Although there are two types of Diabetes, both types can be identified though their presenting symptoms and many of these beginning signs are similar. Below is the list of beginning signs of diabetes:

Unplanned Weight Loss – This warning sign is commonly observed in Type 1 Diabetes. A diabetic person develops the inability to utilize the energy in blood glucose. When this happens, the hunger reflex will be awakened again and again. The person is forced to eat more than usual but when the body’s cell still do not get energy from the glucose in food, they utilize energy from the fat stored in the body and from the muscle tissues. This will decrease body fat and muscle tissues that will cause sudden weight loss.

Frequent Urination – This sign may also be present in other diseases but for diabetes, it happens when the level of glucose in the blood goes up. The kidneys’ filtering system cannot function well because there is a glucose overload in the blood. To dilute the glucose, the kidneys will try to draw out extra water out of the blood and this keeps the person’s bladder full and signals him to urinate.

Unquenchable Thirst – Since the frequent urination occurs, the amount of water in the blood has gone down so it has to be made up. The diabetic person will feel the need to drink more water as he or she is dehydrated. The cycle of urinating and water drinking goes on and on for a diabetic person.

Continual Fatigue – When a person eats, the glucose from the food travels into the person’s bloodstream and the insulin will help its transition into the cells of the body. The cells will use it to produce the energy but when the insulin is not present or if the cells do not react to it anymore, the glucose cannot penetrate the bloodstream. The cells will be starved from energy thus the person will feel tired and exhausted.

Numbness or Tingling in Hands, Arms, Legs, or Feet – This beginning sign is called neuropathy. When there is a continual excess amount of glucose in the blood, the nerves in the peripheral nervous system are damaged. The process occurs gradually overtime and so years may have passed already before a person can be aware of the problem.

Blurry Vision – This can be a result of other conditions such as simple aging but in diabetes, the case is different. The person’s ability to focus is affected when the high blood sugar levels reduce fluid in the tissues of the eye. When diabetes stage advances, new blood cells may form in the retina and will affect again the person’s vision. He or she may see dark spots, flashing lights, or rings around room lights.

Other symptoms of diabetes are dry or itchy skin and cuts or bruises are slower to heal. Since the immune system is affected, the person may have the weaker ability to fight off infection. Although many of these early conditions may be produced by other diseases, the best thing to do is to always seek a professional diagnosis to be sure if a person has diabetes.
